13세기 보편적 질료－형상론의 문제 －보나벤투라 vs. 토마스 아퀴나스－

Abstract

보나벤투라는 모든 것의 기체로서 질료의 편재와 단일성을 내용 으로 하는 보편적 질료－형상론을 전개한다. 그의 질료의 편재에 대한 이 해는 피조물의 본성 및 활동의 기체로 드러나는 질료를 전우주적인 보편적 원리로서 드러나게 하며 질료의 단일성은 절대적 초월성과 무한성으로 표 현되는 절대적 보편원리인 신의 대척점에 서는 신의 그림자로서의 질료의 면모를 드러나게 한다. 한편 이와 같은 질료의 편재와 단일성은 당대 여러 사상가의 비판의 대상이 되었다. 특히 토마스 아퀴나스는 질료의 다의성의 문제와 양적 규정에 따른 분할의 문제를 통해 보편적 질료－형상론의 핵심 테제인 질료의 편재성과 단일성을 무너뜨리려 한다. 이와 같은 도전에 대 해 보나벤투라는 그의 형이상학적 체계 위에서 구축한 철학적 해답 및 해 소책으로 맞서며 질료의 편재성과 단일성을 지키려 한다. Bonaventure develops his Universal Hylomorphism around key conceptions like universal presence and unicity of matter conceived as foundation of all the universes creatures. His idea of the universal presence of matter renders him to the conception of matter as a universal principle that sustains the whole world, including spiritual creatures like angels. Additionally, his thesis on the unicity of matter provides him with a solid base for his argument to show that prime matter is a shadow of the Creator, who enjoys absolute simplicity and infinity, or as a negative but universal representation which stands on the exact opposite side à propos of God, the first principle. This understanding of matter provoked lots of responses (even negative ones), which we can observe in the case of the critique by Thomas Aquinas: The Angelic Doctor. Aquinas wields his conceptual arms like his arguments for the equivocity of the conception of matter and for the quantitative determination which presupposes corporeity, and tries to refute those hallmark conceptions sustaining Universal Hylomorphism. And Bonaventure, facing these challenges, paves his way to defend his own position through his philosophical responses and resolutions based on his proper metaphysical system.
