Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the relation between the Russian national policy and the Sakha national identity. The Russian national policy can be divided by two parts. In first we can see the national policy before the October revolution. In this time the government in Moscow did not care about the small people in Siberia like Sakha. The Russian wanted Sakha people only Yasak. Before the socialist revolution the sakha were always under the russian.

This unequal treatment by the central government was revised radically by the socialist government at first. The Sakha could have an equal membership in the Soviet Union. In this time two things have a great meaning: the new Sakha alphabet was invented, but the shamanism was abolished. The new alphabet was an important means for the intensifying the national identity. However by the abolishing the shamanism the government could see the weakening of the national identity.

The Sakha national identity could be maintained although the national policy of the central government was in principal based on the interest of the Russian. In this process the hard subjective consciousness of the Sakha, the relative progressive national policy of the Russian and the structure of the sakha culture played an important role. In this article I wanted to show that the national identity can not be invented only by the political intention. I think that the modem national identity is based on the traditional national identity. The two identities can not divided so easily as the social scientists think.
