Abstract

This study explores whether a local franchise system in professional sports can function as a catalyst for Korean urban population to form local identity and a sense of belonging to a particular urban community. This identity-making process is examined through an ethnographic case study of Sugnarn City, which hosted the Chunma llhwa Football Club.

Sungnam is a newly created city of which the population consists of people who migrated from different regions of Korea. Moreover, the Bundang new town is divided from the old district in terms of both space and social class. As an way of integrating the diverse population and fostering a shared sense of local identity as citizens of Sungnam, Sungnam's civic authorities pursued the policy of hosting a professional football team into the locality. As a result of complex interaction of various unexpected external factors, Sungnam became the host city of the Chunma Ilhwa FC owned by the Unification Church foundation, and this created a divide between football fans and some devout Christians in Sungnam. Nevertheless, thanks to contingent factors such as the Chunma Ilhwa FC's dazzling performance of winning the K-League championship for three years in succession and the nationwide football fever in the run-up to and the aftermath of the 2002 FlFA World Cup, the Chunma Ilhwa FC has eventually settled down as the football team representing the city of Sungnam.

Our research shows that the advent of the Chunma Ilhwa FC provided a chance for those in the old district to feel proud as a citizen of Sungnam with the best football team in the whole country. Furthermore, local people have also been given the chance to grope for an integrated local identity as the common citizens of the city of Sungnam overcoming the competition and strife based upon the hitherto predominant differential native-place identities. Unfortunately, however, the possibility of the locally-franchised football team to function as a catalyst to formulate a new local identity has managed to be realized to a limited extent, as only football fans from the old district have shown enthusiasm in the performance of the Chunma Ilhwa FC while the majority of Bundang residents expressed little interest.
