Abstract

This study mainly pays attention to new matsuri, namely imported festivals such as Christmas, Valentine and Halloween that are introduced to consuming culture of Japan under the influence of the United States.

They reflect the consuming direction of the Japanese society and become cultural apparatus, which are closely related to the social life. The historical background and meaning of these festivals have been studied and thus the feature, the development and the unique mechanism of them that linked to the accommodation American culture to Japanese Society are verified by comparison. Our study shows that these imported festivals has been neither native nor supplied to the modern society of Japan due to the resemblance. Moreover, they have to satisfy the matter of the consuming society of the present time to gather a commercial success.

In 1980's, the social denture of Japan was changed on a large scale, which had been existed until that time. It was a transition point that a new consuming culture had been created in an original way, which goes over the unilateral accommodation of American culture. The actuality of the Japanese society changes and so does the location of the United States from inside consequently. The sense of value and conduct of the people are changing, and thus, the frame of consuming culture and the mechanism of the accommodation of foreign culture would be complicated. Considering such point, it is more important to analyze these imported festivals from points of view that are both three-dimensional and versatile than to grasp them from one side.
