『한밤의 아이들』과 『루시』 속 빌둥스로만 탈식민화 양상 비교: 가족과 민족 개념을 중심으로

Abstract

리마(Maria Helena Lima)는 「장르 탈식민화하기: 자메이카 킨케이드와 빌둥스로만」(Decolonizing Genre: Jamaica Kincaid and the Bildungsroman)에서 탈식민주의 맥락에서 그간 간과되어 왔던 장르 비평의 문제를 본격적으로 제기한다. 그녀는 장르의 구분이 무너지거나 융합되는 포스트모던 시대에 기존 구분에 따라 장르를 논하는 것을 구식으로 치부하는 한편의 반응과 장르의 변화를 별로 대수롭게 여기지 않는 다른 한편의 무관심 모두에 일침을 가한다. 식민화를 경험한 문화들에서 탈식민의 일환 으로 기존 장르를 자기들의 필요에 맞게 수정하고 재생산해내기 때문에 장르야말로 어떻게 제국이 본국에게 되받아 쓰기(the Empire writes back to the Centre)를 하는지 살펴볼 좋은 지점이라는 주장이다(Lima 1993 432-33). 그녀는 장르 문제, 특히 빌둥스로만(Bildungsroman)이라는 특정 장르에 접근하는데 있어, 첫째 빌둥스로만이 서구적 기원이 뚜렷한 장르라는 점, 둘째 이 장르가 탈식민주의 시대에 와서 제3세계(Third World) 작가들에 의해 전용(appropriation)되어 본래의 장르적 특성자체에 수정이 가해졌음을 인식할 필요가 있음을 명확히 한다. 이렇듯 서구적 기원과 제3세계 작가들의 전용이라는 대립 구도를 들여옴으로써 리마는 단순한 형식적 변형을 넘어서 빌둥스로만이라는 특정 장르가 담당하던 사회적 기능에 주목하기를 제안한다.

Kincaid, on the other hand, fully develops the emotional complexity resulting from the discrepancy between the intimate personal affections and the socio-political oppressions that the mother-figures are complicitous with: her mother with the Caribbean dysfunctional patriarchy and her benevolent employer Maria with neocolonialism. By letting different dimensions―actual, personal relationships and the allegorical significance of the relationships―collide with each other, Kincaid successfully shows that for a female Caribbean like Lucy following the traditional Bildungsroman formula is even more impossible. For the familiar trope of family representing the nation means to be subsumed within the patriarchy or neocolonialism. Kincaid thus addresses the problems of subject formation within the Bildungsroman in showing the unconventional trajectory drawn by the protagonist.
