Synthetic jets have been used in a variety of flow applications, and there have been a lot
of studies on the possibilities of synthetic jets as a flow control device. Many experimental
and numerical researches are reported on the jet structure with cross flow, the jet evolution
in the quiescent condition. However, some issues are not fully investigated yet, such as an
optimal exit configuration for flow control, and so on. Jet exit configuration strongly affects
the vortex developing process which determines the mechanism of jet momentum transport.
In this study, the flow characteristics of synthetic jet depending on jet exit configuration are
investigated using experimental and numerical approaches. Two exit configurations are
selected, one is a conventional rectangular slot type and the other is a serial circular slot type.
In the quiescent condition, velocity profiles of the two type jets are examined using hot wire
measurement and numerical computations, and the jet interaction with cross flow is
investigated. Detailed comparison of the static velocity data shows the difference of flow
evolution structure induced by the two type jets, and the dynamic data reveal how each of
exit configuration interacts with surrounding cross flow.
