염불선(念佛禪)과 예수기도의 비교 -만트라(Mantra)와 변형의식상태(ASC) 개념을 중심으로 --

Abstract

As a meditation technique, the Jesus prayer of Christianity and the repetition of the sacred name of Amitabha of Buddhism demonstrates unusual similarities. For both religious practices, language functions as the most important key to changing the human consciousness. Both meditation techniques also imply that our everyday consciousness may not be all, and that the subliminal dimension of human consciousness may be revealed by means of the repetition of certain words. In this way, human language can be a crucial tool guiding us to the dimension that human language cannot represent. Furthermore, a comparison between Jesus prayer and the repetition of the sacred name of Amitabha provides us with some insights concerning meditation techniques. Indeed, the difference of meditation techniques should not be exaggerated. The unusual similarities clearly demonstrate that, as a mantra technique, Jesus prayer and the repetition of the sacred name of Amitabha are of the same kind. Both methods em phasize love and commitment and also emphasize the emotional aspects which have been neglected by the mainstream in both religious traditions. At the same time, both methods can be properly analyzed by the concepts of deautomatization and altered states of consciousness. In that sense, the comparative study of meditation technique illustrates the need to adopt a more balanced stance towards inter-religious conflict regarding which of the two is the better meditation skill.

무신론적 종교라 일컬어지는 불교와 유신론적 종교인 기독교의 다름은 두 전통에 속한 종교인들뿐만 아니라, 비종교인들에게도 명약관화해 보인다. 특히 두 종교를 신비주의(神秘主義, mysticism)의 비교 관점에서 살펴볼 때 그 차이는 한층 두드러진다.1) 불교는 공(空) 또는 불성(佛性)의 체득을, 기독교 신비주의는 신과의 합일을 궁극적 목표로 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 비범한 종교 체험을 목표로 삼는다는 점에서는 유사하지만, 체험 내용의 차이는 의문을 불러일으킨다. 그러므로 신과 공 개념의 차이는 신비주의의 비교 연구에서 흥미롭지만 동시에 당혹스러운 질문이 아닐 수 없다. 이러한 의문이 논문의 출발점이다. 그러나 이 글은 두 종교가 제시하는 궁극적 실재의 비교가 아닌, 그 사전 작업으로 수행의 측면에 집중하고자 한다.2) 더 구체적으로는 불교의 염불선(念佛禪)과 기독교의 예수기도(Jesus Prayer)라는 수행법의 유사성을 살펴보는 것이 논문의 주된 목적이다.
