Temperamental Analysis on Irregular Pitch in Chinese Folk Music

Abstract

In Chinese folk music there widely exists a special kind of temperament, that is, an interval between major interval and minor interval in the form of stave. It is named neutral interval. Concretely speaking, it is the neutral third interval between major third and minor third, and the neutral second interval between major second and minor second. The neutral interval is reflected in 'kuyin' mode of folk music in Shaanxi Province, 'Zhongsanliu' and 'Huowu' modes of Chaozhou folk music in Guangdong Province and some special modes of Mukamu music in Uygar nationality. Certainly, such a special interval also exists in the folk music of other areas in China. As its termperamental character has surpassed the well-known circle of fifths temperament and pure temperament, its temperament is called irregular temperament. The neutral interval of the irregular temperament shows that man has made a deep research into nature temperament. To probe into the 'neutral interval' temperament theories is to pursue the deep mathematical laws of nature temperament.

중국 민속음악에는 특수한 종류의 조율음 곧 오선보의 장음정과 단음정 사이의 음정이 폭넓게 존재한다. 이것을 중음정(neutral interval)이라 한다. 구체적으로 말해 장3도와 단3도 사이의 중3도, 장2도와 단2도 사이의 중2도가 그것이다. 중음정은 산시(俠西)성 민속음악의 쿠인(苦音) 선법, 광둥(廣東)성 차오저우(漸州) 민속음악의 중싼류(重三六) 및 훠우(活五) 선법, 그리고 위구르족 무카무 음악의 몇 가지 특수선법들에 나타난다. 물론 이들 특수음정은 중국내 다른 지역의 민속음악에도 있다. 그 조율법의 특성은 잘 알려진 순환5도 조율과 순정률의 범위를 벗어나므로, 이를 비정규(irregular) 조율법이라 한다. 비정규 조율법의 중음정은 인간이 자연조율법을 심층까지 연구해 왔음을 보여준다. 중음정의 조율이론에 천착하는 것은 자연조율의 심오한 수학법칙을 따라가는 것이기도 하다.
