국제한글음성문자의 일본어, 중국어, 태국어 표기

Abstract

이 글은 국제한글음성문자를 사용하여 일본어, 중국어, 태국어의 표기를 시도한다. 이 세 언어는 모두 고유의 문자로 표기되고 있으나, 여기서는 이들을 한글음성문자로 표기하였을 때의 장점과 유리한 점을 살펴보고자 한다. 일본어, 중국어, 태국어의 한글음성문자 표기는 <한글음성문자 연구회>에서 장기간에 걸쳐서 연구, 검토한 결과이다. 연구회에 참여한 여러 회원과, 특히 일본의 중국의 리 하이롱(산동대), 일본의 모리 카나(인천대), 태국의 수난타(서울대) 회원과 총괄을 담당한 황효성 총무(서울대)의 노고가 컸음을 밝힌다. 그리고 독자의 이해를 돕기 위하여 이들 세 언어의 표기에 앞서서 국제한글음성문자의 원리와 활용법을 먼저 기술한다. 국제한글음성문자는 http://ikpa.snu.ac.kr에서 글자의 폰트를 내려 받아 설치하면 누구나 입력하고 출력할 수 있음을 밝혀 둔다. 현재 한글음성문자는 MS Word에서만 지원되며 아래 한글에서는 지원되지 않는다.

An attempt is made in this paper to transcribe the Chinese, Japanese and Thai languages, using the International Korean Phonetic Alphabet (IKPA for short). The IPA transcriptions of the Aesops fable The North Wind and the Sun in the three languages as printed in the Manual of the International Phonetic Association are used as the speech samples for the IKPA transcription. The tones are not marked in the IKPA transcription of the three languages just for the sake of simplicity.

The IKPA is an international phonetic alphabet devised by the present writer on the basis of the Korean alphabet, which has been widely praised throughout the world as an outstanding phonetic alphabet. Prior to the actual IKPA transcription of the three languages, an outline of IKPA is given for the benefit of the readers who are unfamiliar yet with the principles and applications of IKPA. It should be noted that this paper is an outcome of the IKPA Seminar at Seoul National University where its members have carried out a series of thorough discussions and debates on the IKPA transcription of Chinese, Japanese and Thai, with active participation of Li Hai Rong (Shantong Univ.), Mori Kana (Incheon Univ.), Sunanta (SNU), Hwang Hyosung (SNU/secretary of the seminar) and Lee Sook Hyang (Wonkwang Univ.). It is hoped that this paper will serve to illustrate to what extent IKPA can represent the sounds of the world languages (as accurately and systematically as IPA), while demonstrating its unique function as a truly universal, organic and visible phonetic alphabet.
