Towards a Re-evaluation of Invisible Music Theories

Abstract

Music theories exist in every culture. In Asian cultures (especially Japan), however, people tend to consider that music theory refers only to the theory of 19th-century Western music. When I was appointed chair of the committee for examining music education textbooks, I was shocked by the indifferent attitude of textbook editors. In the section entitled "music theory," the editors described modern Western music theory without qualifying it as such. There was no mention of music theories from other cultures. These were not Japanese translations of Western textbooks. They were conceived, edited, and published in Japan. One can hardly blame Japanese children for thinking that Japan has no music theory other than modern Western music theory. The same was true of the sections on music notation. Under the heading "the study of notation," only Western notation was described. Although Japan has a long history of notation and music printing, there were no mentioning of either. I consider that such indifferent attitudes towards non-Western music cultures may have enhanced the process of canonizing Western music.

음악이론은 모든 문화에 존재한다. 그러나 아시아 문화관(특히 일본)에서는 음악이론이라 하면 단순히 19세기의 서양 음악이론만을 가리킨다고 생각하는 경향이 있다. 음악교과서 심의위원장으로 일하면서 나는 교과서 편찬자들의 무심한 태도에 충격을 받았다. 음악이론이라는 제목의 장에서 그들은 근대 서양음악의 이론을 근대 서양음악이론이라고 특정하지 않고 기술했다. 다른 문화권의 음악이론에 대한 언급도 없었다. 서양 교과서의 일본어 번역판이 아니라, 일본에서 구상되고 편찬되고 출판된 것인데도 말이다. 일본 어린이들이 일본에는 근대 서양음악이론 말고는 음악이론이 없다고 생각해도 나무라기 힘들 지경이다. 기보법을 설명하는 장에서도 마찬가지였다. 기보법 연구라고 해놓고는 서양 기보법만을 설명하고 있었다. 일본에도 기보와 음악 저술의 긴 역사가 있는데도, 한 마디도 언급하고 있지 않았다. 비서구 음악문화에 대한 그러한 무심한 태도가 아마 서구음악을 교조화하는 과정을 가속화했을 것이라고 나는 생각한다.
