Considering a Player's Cultural Background

Abstract

The title of this panel, "Interaction and New Trends in Music," highlights aspects of my compositions. A few years ago I began writing pieces for ensembles that included Asian instruments. Ever since then, in public discussions I have been faced with the question: "How can you write for instruments you don't know?" implying of course both technical as well as cultural aspects of the instrument. In this paper I will describe how I technically approach writing for instruments with which I am not previously familiar. I will also answer the implied question: "How can you write for these instruments which are part of a different culture than your own?" I will describe how I consider the cultural heritages of the players and how they find their ways into my music.

이번 세션의 주제, 음악의 상호작용과 새 경향은 내 작품세계를 잘 말해 준다. 몇 년 전 나는 아시아 악기들을 포함한 합주곡들을 쓰기 시작했다. 그 이래 줄곧, 공개토론 때마다 이런 질문을 받아 왔다: 어떻게 알지도 못하는 악기를 위한 작품을 쓸 수 있는가?" 알지 못한다는 것은 물론 그 악기의 기술적 측면뿐 아니라 문화적 측면까지 암시하는 것이리라. 이 글에서는, 전에 알지 못하던 악기들을 위한 작곡에 내가 기술적으로 접근해 가는 과정을 말해 보겠다. 또, 이런 잠재적 질문에 대해서도 답해 보겠다: 당신과 다른 문화에 속한 이 악기들을 위한 작품을 어떻게 쓸 수 있는가? 연주자들이 물려받은 문화적 유산을 내가 어떻게 생각하는지, 그리고 연주자들은 내 음악에서 어떻게 제 나름의 길들을 찾아나가는지 설명해 보겠다.
