Negotiating the Future Japanese Music as a Case in Point

Abstract

For the Japanese whom I know there seem to be two separate worlds. One small set of people participates in Japanese traditional music, and the rest in Western music - classical or some other. Structurally, a paradigm of separation is in place. In this paper I want first to trace briefly how that came to be and then to speak to two trends in contemporary music that appear to be drawing the two worlds closer. Then I want to theorize a process by which musical values change in Japan and, finally, to offer one additional perspective on the negotiation of Japanese music into the future. When the government of Japan in the mid~ 19th century faced the reality that new relations would have to be constructed with the outside world, it had the responsibility of negotiating the future of their country and their culture. The means by which the Meiji era (1868-1912) leaders chose to do that were complex and multi-faceted.

내가 아는 일본인들에게는 두 개의 별도의 세계가 있는 것처럼 보인다. 한쪽 소수 그룹은 일본 전통음악을, 나머지는 서양음악을 한다. 구조적으로, 분리의 패러다임이 꼭 들어맞는다. 이 글에서 나는 먼저 어떻게 이러한 상황이 되었는지 더듬어 보고 나서, 두 세계의 간격을 좁히고 있는 것으로 보이는 현대음악 안의 두 조류에 대해 얘기해 보겠다. 그리고 나서 일본 안에서 음악적 가치가 변하는 과정을 이론화하고, 마지막으로 미래를 향한 일본음악 만들기에 대한 나의 전망을 덧붙이겠다. 19세기 중반 외부 세계와 새로운 관계를 형성해야 하는 현실에 부딪치자 일본정부는 자기 나라, 자기 문화의 미래를 만들어가야 할 책임을 떠안게 되었다. 메이지 시대(1868~1912) 지도자들이 선택한 수단은 복잡하고 다면적이었다.
