The Musical and Spiritual Duality of Nomai Music in Northern Japan

Abstract

Nōmai is a dance drama that was introduced, almost four-hundred years ago, to the district of Higashidorimura - an area located at the northernmost tip of the main island of Honshu. Itinerant priests known as yamabushi, or mountain priests, developed nōmai as a vehicle for evangelizing to provincial audiences. They eventually taught the tradition to the local population to insure its survival, and today it continues to be performed by fourteen villages. Yamabushi were practitioners of Shugendō, an ascetic religion which combined primordial beliefs in the sacredness of mountains with the precepts and rituals of Shintoism, Shingon Buddhism, Confucianism, and religious Taoism. They synthesized Buddhist musical elements and Shugendō beliefs with already existing folk Shinto performing traditions associated with agricultural rites and the appeasement of deities; this synthesis gives nōmai its unique character. The present study centers on the ceremonial and prayer pieces which form the core of the nōmai repertoire and represent the ritual essence of the tradition.

노마이〔能舞〕는 흔슈의 최북단에 위치한 히가시도리무라구에 지금으로부터 거의 400년 전에 소개되었던 가면극으로, 야마부시(산에 사는 중)라고 알려진 순례승려들이 지방의 주민들에게 복음을 전파하기 위한 방편으로 발전시켰다. 그들은 지역 주민들에게 전통을 세워주었고 오늘날까지 14개 마을에서 이 전통은 계속 유지되고 있다. 야마부시는 산을 신성하게 여기는 원시신앙, 신도, 신곤불교, 유교와 도교의 교리와 전례가 합해진 금욕수행 종교인 슈겐도를 실천했던 사람들이다. 이들은 불교 음악의 요소와 슈겐도 신앙을 기존의 농경의식 및 오신(娛神)의식과 관련된 신도(神道)의 민속 전통과 결합시켰고 이렇게 결합된 노마이는 독특한 성격을 띠게 되었다. 본 연구는 노마이 레퍼터리의 핵심이면서 전통 제의식의 골수가 되는 의식문과 기도문에 중점을 두었다.
