Abstract

As Thoreau wrote in his essay <Walking>, a poet's study finds itself

not within his library but out of doors. The very concept of a poets

study as an ever extending, almost transcendental, birthplace of poetry is

what this article starts with and tries to prove through some of Pushkin s

works - mainly H' Evgenii Onegin~ ， <The Egyptian Night>, and the metapoems

such as <A Small Town>, <To My Ink-pot>, <The Muse>, <The

Poet> , and <Autumn>. The article has three parts. The first part deals with the so-called phe nomenon of the library" (Foucault' s term), as is demonstrated in H'Evgenii Onegin~ on various levels. A special attention falls on Tatiana' s reading

and her affinity with nature. The second part examines the phenomenon of a dandy s study in the cultural context of the male aristocrat' s life in the early 19th century. The chronotopic contrast between the studies in the city and the viIJage, with their respective tendency towards self-demonstration and self-concealment

underlines Pushkin' s own view on the ideal study of a dandy-poet.

The third, and concJusive, part turns to the phenomenon of a poet' s study. A thorough analysis of Pushkins meta-poems with study-related scenes shows an evolutionary process, in which a poet' s study indeed grows out of the cJosed space of books to the metaphoric outdoors", to the endless space of poetic imagination and dream.
