Abstract

This study aims to clarify the Part-of-Speech membership and the syntactic function of what has been called "possessive adjectives(PA)" in Russian with respect to the theory of Function Adapter(=FA). After discussing several characteristic features of P A on various levels and critically reviewing the previous of these features, the study introduces the concept of FA. The inflectional status of FA as a new inflectional category is motivated by the fact that while there is a prototypical (unmarked) relation between parts-of-speech and syntactic functions, the relation may be destroyed, in which case FA remedies the deviated relation. It is argued in this paper that PA is a noun that is markedly used like a determiner and that the suffix lin! is a FA, which adapts the noun to the syntactic function of a determiner. This understanding explains why the base nominal underlying P A must be referentially definite: the determiner assigns definiteness (definite identity) to the entity referred to by the noun.
