러시아어 조격 재조명

Abstract

최근에 이르기까지도 조격에 대해 암묵적으로 수용되어 온 지배적 견해는 조격이 다른 격들보다도 유독 잡다한 하부 의미들을 가지며 이로부터 공통된 하나의 대(大)의미를 도출하기란 (거의) 불가능하다는 것이다. 물론, 이에 대한 반론도 심심찮게 이어져 온 것은 사실이지만 이러한 시도들은 아직은 부분적 성과를 보이는데 머물고 있다. 본 논문의 목표는 이러한 시도를 좀 더 총체적으로 발전시켜 기존의 비관론적 견해를 극복하려는 것이다. 격에 대해 무작위적 나열식 설명으로 일관하는 전통적 방식을 개선하려는 노력의 일환으로 통사적 접근 및 의미적 접근이 등장한 바 있지만, 통사적 접근은 원초적으로 격 의미를 부정한다는 점에서, 의미적 접근은 총체적 의미 도출보다 하부 의미들 간의 차이 규명에 주력한다는 점에서 두 접근 모두 한계를 갖는다. 최근 등장한 인지적 접근은 하부 의미들 간의 관계에 기초한 네트워크 구축을 시도하였다는 점에서 체계적 격 의미 추구라는 목표에 한 발 다가선 이론으로 판단된다. 그러나 하부 의미들 간의 상관성이나 네트워크의 역동성 측면에서 인지적 접근도 아직은 상당한 보완이 필요해 보인다. 본 논문은 이러한 보완 및 개선 작업의 일환이라 할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 본 논문은 조격의 중심 의미라 할 수 있는 도구 의미가 확장과 파생을 통해 상호적이고 위계적인 다양한 하부 의미들로 진화되어 가는 과정을 규명할 것이며, 이를 통해 조격이 효율적이고 역동적인 네트워크를 형성하는 하나의 유기체임을 간명하게 보이고자 한다.

The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct a cognitive-semantic network of

the Russian instrumental case and to confirm that the instrumental case is not

a haphazard collection of unrelated meanings. I presume that case meaning

spreads from center to periphery by extension and derivation.

The central meaning of the instrumental case is "instrument". "Instrumental"

meaning spreads to "antipassive", "passive" and "existential" subtypes by the

cognitive extension of the meaning of instrument to other semantic categories

such as patient, agent or semantic zero. During the extension arise transitional

subtypes such as "possessed I", "middle", "impersonal" and "possessed II". subtypes such as "possessed I", "middle", "impersonal" and "possessed II".

The central meaning spreads not only by simple extension but also by

extension through abductive reasoning. "Accompanying" subtype is inferred by

abductive, i.e., misleading analogy from the "instrumental" meaning. "Accompanying" subtype in turn extends to "proximate" subtype through spatial analogy. Derivation is another important factor for the spread of the central meaning. "Instrumental" meaning spreads to "transformational" and "spatial" subtypes via derivation. They are different from other subtypes, in that the central meaning is in some way transformed and restricted in the application of sphere.

"Transformational" subtype in turn extends to "comparative" and "predicate"

subtypes, and "spatial" subtype to "temporal" subtype. In sum, "instrumental" meaning spreads to "antipassive", "passive", "existential" and "accompanying" subtypes by extension, and to "transformational" and "spatial" subtypes by derivation. Other secondary subtypes may arise during or after the spread by extension. The common semantic invariant of all the subtypes is "instrumental use".
