Abstract
This paper tries to understand Christopher Lasch's social thought by tracing his complex intellectual trajectory, Lasch began his intellectual career, revolting against the mainstream of post-World War Il American intellectual thought. During the 1960s. he identified himself as a socialist, By the time The True and Only Heaven was published in 1991, however. he declared to be a cultural conservative who antagonized the majority of cultural radicals, Although to pin down his place in modern American intellectual history has been a difficult job, this paper argues that his social thought can best be understood in the whole context of American intellectual tradition which emphasized the unity and harmony of the whole and the parts.
