탈자아적(脫自我的) 사유의 교육학적 전망

Abstract

본 논문은 테오도어 발라우프가 제창한 탈자아성의 교육구상에 대하여 살펴보고 그 교육적 의미를 숙고해보기 위해서 기획되었다. 발라우프에 따르면 서양의 전통적인 교육실천과 교육학은 자아추구에 귀착되는데, 이것은 인간을 세계와 자연, 공동체로부터 소외시키는 자기전권부여의 이데올로기이다. 사유가 이러한 전도(顚倒) 상태에서 벗어나기 위해서는 원천적 사유, 즉 하나의 전체가 열려있음으로의 소급이 필수적이다. 이러한 사유는 자아와 세계의 구별이 없는, 그래서 모든 존재자들이 그 자체로 모습을 드러내는 우주적 사유이며 탈자아적 사유이다. 발라우프는 이러한 탈자아적 사유에서 진정한 인간성을 보았으며, 이를 밝히고 보존하는 것을 교육과 도야의 최고과제로 삼았다. 발라우프는 이러한 탈자아성의 원리의 입장에 서서 전통적인 도야이론의 핵심개념인 인격개념을 비판한다. 왜냐하면 이른바 인격의 개념은 자아개념에 기초하며, 따라서 내면성의 형성을 의미하는 도야는 정신과 의지로 특징지어지는 자아를 절대화시키는 결과로 나타나기 때문이다. 그러나 필자는 교육이 인간 삶의 다차원성을 포괄할 수 있기 위해서는 전통적 교육이론의 핵심적인 계기인 자기보존의 전망과 발라우프가 제기하는 탈자아성의 전망을 상호연관적인 관계로 파악해야 한다고 주장한다. 교육은 성장 세대에게 무엇보다도 먼저 자기보존의 능력을 길러주어야 한다. 왜냐하면 자기보존의 안정된 토대위에서 만이 성장세대는 자기중심성을 벗어나 우주적 사유로 나아갈 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 현대적 삶의 상황 속에서 인간은 한편으로 도구적 사유를 필요로 한다. 그러나 인간이 참된 인간성을 보존하기 위해서는 다른 한편으로 사유의 도구화를 - 적어도 사유의 핵심에 있어서 만이라도 - 벗어나고자 노력해야 한다. 결론적으로 인간의 도야는 자기보존의 원리와 탈자아성의 원리의 변증법을 통한 지속적인 인격성장을 의미할 것이다.

This paper analyzes Ballauff's conception of the pedagogy of selflessness and reflects on its pedagogical impact. According to Ballauff, the European pedagogy up to date eventually leads to the search for self, which represents the fundamental ideology of human empowerment and estranges man from world, nature and society. In order to be rid of this wrongfulness, thinking must attempt to turn back to its origins. Originally, thinking is an openness of a whole, in which no differentiation between I and World exists. In such an original thinking, all beings appear undisguised as themselves. For this reason, this thinking can be called universal, selfless thinking. Ballauff recognizes in this kind of thinking the true humanity, the opening up and preservation of which is the task of pedagogy. In accordance with this pedagogical principle of selflessness, Ballauff criticizes the concept of personality, which represents the central thought of the traditional European education theories. Since the concept of personality bases on the concept of the I, education in the sense of formation of individual innerness leads to an absolutification of the I which is characterized as spirit and will. According to Ballauff, the essential task of education and formation therefore is the transformation of egocentric thinking into selfless, cosmic thinking. We, however, believe that Ballauff's pedagogical perspective of 'selflessness' should be connected with the traditional pedagogical perspective of 'self-preservation' in order to achieve a comprehensive theory of education. Above all, education must empower the young person to preserve himself, because he can aim at selflessness only after the basis for self-preservation has been firmly established. On the one hand, man needs instrumental thinking In our modern living situation. To preserve true humanity, however, he must also seek to rid thinking, at least in its essence, of all instrumentalisation. This is achieved through the sublimation of thinking to the cosmic horizon of thought. Thus, education means a continuous growth of the person within the dialectics of self-preservation and selflessness.
