論語에 나타난 인간중심 상담원리

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 孔子의 어록인 論語를 현대적 의미의 상담이론으로 이해하는데 있다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 서구 상담이론의 주류인 인간중심 상담원리에 기초하여 論語를 분석하였다. 한국인들은 아직도 마음의 儒敎的 습성들 상태에 있는 경우가 많으며, 많은 아시아인들 역시 오랜 역사 속에서 儒敎의 가르침과 사상에 익숙해져있다. 반면 서구의 상담이론이 도입된 이래 상담분야의 연구는 서구상담의 이해와 실천에 편중되어 전개되었다. 그러나 근래에는 전통적 관점에서 인간을 이해할 필요가 있으며, 이를 위해 상담분야에서도 새로운 접근법이 개발되고 실천되어야 한다는 주장이 적지 않은 설득력을 얻고 있다. 이에 비추어 필자는 다문화적인 관점의 상담이론과 그 접근법이 개발되어야한다는 입장에서 인간중심 상담원리에 기초하여 論語에 나타난 상담의 개념과 접근법을 추출하였다. 論語는 인간을 선하고 자발적으로 자아실현을 향해 나아가는 존재로 본다. 그런 의미에서 論語의 인간관은 인간중심 상담원리와 마찬가지로 인간주의(humanism)에 입각해 있다. 또한 자아실현 과정에는 필연적으로 타인과의 교류가 필요하다고 본다는 점에서도 論語의 인간관은 인간중심 상담원리의 인간관과 서로 통한다고 할 수 있다. 論語가 추구하는 인간상도 인간중심 상담에서 추구하는 인간상과 매우 유사하다. 論語는 가장 이상적인 인간상을 君子로 표현하고 있는 반면, 인간중심 상담은 충분히 기능하는 사람을 목표로 한다. 君子와 충분히 기능하는 사람은 표현의 방식이나 인간완성의 정도에서도 어느 정도 차이가 있지만, 양자가 모두 인간의 선한 본성과 사랑을 인간관계속에서 실현한 사람들이다. 그러나 모든 사람이 순탄하게 君子나 충분히 기능하는 사람이 될 수 있는 것은 아니다. 論語와 인간중심 상담원리는 개인들이 삶에서 얻게되는 각각의 경험과 습관, 교육의 차이로 성장에 방해를 받게 된다는 데 관점을 같이한다. 나아가 성장에 방해받은 사람들을 돕는 상담의 전략과 기법으로 긍정적 존중과 공감적 이해 그리고 일치성을 중요하게 제시하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이런 일련의 내용들이 論語의 각 편에서 구체적으로 孔子의 언행을 통하여 어떻게 드러났는지를 분석하여 제시하였다. 論語에 나타나 있는 상담원리를 인간중심 상담원리의 주제별로 구분하여 제시함으로써, 인간중심 상담원리에 익숙한 상담자들이 論語에 나타난 상담원리를 이해하도록 도왔다. 이런 연구결과는 앞으로 상담자들이 다양한 문화권의 내담자들을 상담할 때 전문적 상담접근을 용이하게 할 수 있도록 도움을 주고, 나아가 儒敎文化圈의 내담자들이 상담에 쉽게 동참하도록 하는데 유용하게 사용될 것으로 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to review the Analects of Confucius(論語) on the Person-centered counseling theory and to understand the meaning of its result. Then, discuss the probability to applicate it to Asian and Korean counseling. The Confucianism has recently been interested the Western and Korean societies, but it has not yet been well introduced within the counseling field. Most people in Korea are still in the Confucian habits of the heart. Now, it is time that we have to develop a counseling approach based on the spirit of the Eastern and Korean worlds altogether. So this study tries to compare some counseling principles from the Analects of Confucius with those of the Person-centered counseling theory. The ideology of the Analects of Confucius is based on humanism as is the Person-centered counseling theory. The Analects of Confucius agrees with goodness of humanity, and its goal in relation to human growth is to cultivate a man of virtue as well as fully functioning person actualizing themselves. It has some helping skill for the person and it is very strongly related to the person centered counseling. It maintains that people always try to find themselves in virtue and experience a state of self actualization. But people's efforts for self actualization do not succeed always. That is the reason why people need the help of others. Both ideologies also agree with the idea that counselors who help their clients should be aware of their own self. This study analysed the counseling principle of the Analects of Confucius from Western counseling view point based on the Person-centered counseling theory. It will enrich the counseling process and strategies in the Eastern and Korean cultures. The result of this study will support understanding multicultural viewpoints in the counseling field and broaden the counselors' perspectives with regard to the counseling process as an effective approach to human change for the better.
