Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parents' SES and parents' psychological process variables on the student's academic achievements. The psychological process variables were divided between 'the parent-child relationships' which showed psychological aspects and 'parents involvement' which showed parents' involvement in child's academic area. This study explored the predictive and mediative role of the psychological process variables in the student's academic achievements using structural equation modeling. In order to answer the questions this study analysed 1,528 junior high school students and 1,224 academic high school students by utilizing the data of 2004 Korean Education Employment Panel(KEEP). The results showed that 1) the parents' SES had mediated by the parent-child relationships, parents' involvement, self concept, self-directed learning(studying) time rather than a direct effect on the child's academic achievement. 2) psychological process variables in family had a larger effect on the student's academic achievements than the parents' SES. 3) the parents' involvement among the psychological process variables was most influential factors on both junior high and high school student's academic achievements, specially in terms of junior high school students, the parents' involvement had a larger effect. 4) self-concept had mediated by the self-directed learning(studying) time rather than a direct effect on the academic achievement. 5) self-directed learning(studying) time had an effect on both junior high and high school student's academic achievements and junior high school students had a larger effect on the academic achievements. Finally some limitations of this study were suggested for the future study.
