Abstract
이 글은 초등학교 운동회를 분석 대상으로 한다. 운동회의 역사적 기원과 한국 교육에서의 운동회의 변천사 및 그에 대한 일반 사람들의 기억을 살펴보고, 운동회가 갖는 양면성에 대한 사회사적인 분석을 시도한다. 특히 운동회의 양면성에 주목한다. 운동회는 국민국가가 통제하는 국가교육에서 국민을 양성하기 위한 규율 장치의 하나로 고안되고 정착된 학교 행사의 하나로 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 운동회를 경험한 사람들에게 그것은 오히려 아동과 성인, 지역 공동체가 함께 즐기는 비일상적인 잔치 혹은 축제로 기억되고 있다. 운동회에 대한 기억 속에서 가족ᆞ지역공동체 세계의 유대감에 대한 향수, 개인주의적 경쟁과 능력주의 이전에 존재했던 평등한 놀이세계에 대한 향수를 엿볼 수 있다.



In Korea, athletic meeting in primary school had dual faces or characteristics. Those dual characteristics have been made within the socio-historical contexts of modern state education. According to the aspects of post-modern social science, athletic meeting is one of educational discipline devices by which state apparatuses intend to interpellate individuals into nations. Using athletic meetings in school, nation-states have tried to make new subjects=nations. This is one face of athletic meeting grasped from above. But, at the same time, athletic meetings also have another face. In memories of those who have experienced athletic meetings, they took quite different emotional contents or characteristics from those discipline devices. In their memories, athletic meeting was one of the happiest events during school years and a kind of jolly festivals rather than discipline-oriented educational activities. Within the memories of peoples, we can identify some elements of nostalgias toward extended families and rural communities in which they had once lived or relatively egalitarian and non-individualistic, non-meritocratic life-world which has been at last abolished or weakened during modernization process. These are so-called dual faces of athletic meetings in histories of Korean or Asian modern educations.
