Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the significant predictors that affect on problem-based learning outcomes. Based on literature reviews, team efficacy and metacognition were identified as predictors of PBL outcomes. Data were collected from 40 students who participated PBL-based course in a university located in Seoul, Korea and were analyzed by multiple regression analysis. As a result, team efficacy significantly predicted satisfaction, however, did not predict problem solving skills. In addition, metacognition significantly predicted problem solving skills, however, did not predict satisfaction. Thanks to the aforementioned results, we now know that learners team efficacy were the major variable to predict the students satisfaction. In addition, metacognition was the variable to predict problem solving skills. It suggests that team efficacy and metacognition should be facilitated in PBL-based course. First, team efficacy, the belief on each team members, might be affected by the way of team composition methods. So considering students' characteristics for team composition would promote their team efficacy. Second, training and asking questions during the PBL would promote metacognition.
