The purpose of this study is to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of the hierarchy of markets. Attention is also given to the functional and structural changes of periodic markets of each level. The mixed system of mobile and fixed firm is commom in rural periodic markets of Korea. Throughout history the periodic market has been the prime exchange facility for most commercial transactions. And the growth of market centers has almost the same process with the urban development in an evolutionary sequence. Currently, all markets have two-per-hsiin cycles, which seem to reflect an economic need to bring different elements of the population together in time and space in such a way that is convenient for all. The writer, by measuring market area and total population served of each market in the study area (primarily using the intervew and questionaire techniques), identified three hierarchicar levels of markets and central markets from the lowest order. The spatial model of the central plce system derived is shown in Fig. 11. As mechanized transport becomes widespread and the relative cost of transport declines as well as income level is raised, there is a tendency toward "upwardshift" in the central place hierarchy, resulting the lowest order central places to lose their economic functions to larger centers.-
