A Study on the Urbanization Processes of Cheongju City

- 1. The purpose of this study is to clarify the entity of Cheongju City, which is medium sized provincial capital in Chungcheng-bukdo in Korea, on urban geographical perspective. As the first step of the study, the writer intends to inquire the uranization processes of Cehongju City by examining the changes in four indices-popilation, land use, industry structure, and urban form during 1926-75. 2. As the result of this research, the conclusionsare as follows: 1) In terms of population index, the urbanization of Cheongju City has existed since 1925. Because Saju-myun was incorporated into Cheongju City, the population of the City has remarkably increased after 1963. The population size of Cheongju City has taken the 10th to the 14th rank in South Korea since 1941. The population densities of Gagyung. Bokdae-dong, Dam-dong and Mochung-dong have sharply increased during 1962-75. The population-agglomerated sectors of Cheongju City are Namju-dong, Seowun-dong, Nammunro-Ist St., Seokkyodong and Seomun-dong. Cheongju City is now regarded as 'over bounded city'. 2) The farm areas in Cheongju City have sharply decreased by 89.5% during 1962-75, and have been reclassified into non-farm areas since 1962. Non-farmers and part-time farmers have increased, and the pattern of the agriculture of Cheongju City has gradually been changed into that of commercial farm since 1962.
