Abstract

This study delas with the spatial patterns and characteristics of office activities in Seoul and the locational characteristics of major office districts. To identify and explain the spatial patterns and characteristics of office activities in Seoul, the analytic procedures employed in this study are as follows.

1. Office activities have been classified into eight categories according to their office functions; manufacturing offices, trade offices, finance offices, technical services, professinal services, travel services, communication offices and government offices. 2. To identify the spatial patterns of office activities1 the ratio of relative concentration, namely "mean and standard deviation" has been used. The mean and standard deviation of each office activity were calculated respectively on the basis of 627 unit areas of I x I km grid cell. The unit areas which are greater in the mumbers of office establishment than the mean for each office activity are considered to be relatively concentrated, and it means further highly concentrated if unit areas of which the deviations are greater than 1. 3. To analyze the locational characteristics of major office districts, the questionnaire and direct fieid survey were performed in the three unit areas(l x 2 km grid cell) of highly concentrated office activities. They are CBD, Yeoeuido-Yeongdeungpo District and Yeongdong District.
