大衆交通手段의 起源과 發達 : 서울과 外國都市와의 比較硏究

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the characteristics of the genesis and growth of the public transportation in Seoul compared with those in foreign, especially European and American, cities. Seoul was chosen as a study area, because it had the first internal public transportation in Korea and because the distribution of private and public transportation concentrates in Seoul. Among the public transportation is examined in this research. In case of foreign cities, omnibus was developed as the first internal public transportation for persons without reference to class. But horsedrawn street car replaced omnibus soon because it had problems of the slow speed and the limitation of number of carrying persons at once. Horse-drawn street car and later electric street

car became the real internal public transportation modes in terms of playing the role in the spatial extension of the city. The spatial limitation of these street car railways and the crowd of people in the streets made transportation problems and led to develop other transportation modes such as the elevated railway and subway, which were not effective for solving the problems. In the early 20th century, bus started the operation as a new internal public transportation, competed with

electric street car railway, and became the only internal public transportation mode in most cities.
