Abstract
The recent surge of producer services including a wide range of professional and scientific services has increased the recognition of economic, social, and spatial changes caused by producer services in carious regional scales. In the intrametropolitan level, in particular, spatial and functional linkages between corporate headquarters performing administration and control function and associated producer services providing intermediate inputs essential to headquarters' function are gradually gaining interest. In this context, this study investigates the interdependence and spatial characteristics between the two functions by examining the locational relationship, externalization of and decision-making authority for producer services, and service linkages in this study include finance, insurance, real estate, and business services. The major findings are summed up into the followings. First, producer services and corporate headquarters are overwhelmingly clustered in the Seoul metropolitan region and show a corresponding locational pattern, concentrated in Seoul with a large portion in C.B.D. This indirectly suggests that these functions pursue the economies of scale and agglomeration and have a close functional and locational interrelationship. Second, characteristics of the unit region in which headquarters are located and types of firm exert influence on the direction of headquarter relocation. Headquarters of small and single-plant firm move down the intrametropolitan hierarchy, while headquarters of large and multi -plant firm with a larger demand for specialized and technically sophisticated services in corporate activities tend to move up along with the intrametropolitan hierarchy.
