Abstract
Little further development in the analysis of rent occurred after the decline of classical political economy. But the late 1960s and early 1970s saw a considerable revival of interest in Marxist rent theory. Early in the revival most Marxist rent scholars mechanically applied Marx's agricultural rent categories to urban social problems, especially to land and housing problems. But they aroused practical significance of Marx's rent theory.

Amid mechanical applications Ball (1977, 1980) and Fine (1979) made a contribution to discriminating Marx from Ricardo. The relationship between Marx's theory of value and theory of rent, the contradiction between capital and landed property came to understand, which placed land problems at the general process of capitalist production and accumulation. On the other hand, in spite of many efforts applying Marx's rent theory to urban land use, there are splits of opinion on the urban rent theory, i.e., the true believers and the sceptics. Contemporary rent theory ha s problems to be solved; abstraction levels to be included in rent theory in general out of Marx agricultural rent and relationships between unproductive land use and law of value.
