A Study on Late Quaternary Periglacial Cryogenic Structures of Granite Regolith in Korea

- The main purpose of this research is to clarify the chacter-istic and genetic process of the physical platy structures within the granite regolith of the intermontane basins, pediments and low relief plains in Korea. This study aims to rerearch these platy or lamellae structure view of the climatic geomorphology and restore the paleoenvironment of Korean penisula for regional similarity and difference.
For this paper, granite regolith in Taegwallyong, Chong ju, Pusan and Kimhae regions are selected as survey areas. To fulfil these purpose, the author has analyzed these physical characteristics of grain-size distribution, examination of thin section, I.e. with fabric and structure, at a level of observation beyond that obtainable with the naked eye, X-ray diffraction to identify mineral species, while the state of weathered bedrock and deposites which covered the weathered bedrock were observed throuth field works.
After investigating granite regolith the platy structure formations were proved the cryogenic structure to be formed by the perigracial processes during cold climatic cinditions. These fossil features were bonded to the hydraulic and thermal conditions. Also, it proved that the granite regolith is almost physical granular disintegration. The cryogenic structures have numerous microfissuration which developed parallel to the surface and charicterized by the reddish Bt-band(Cailleux 1966). They are due to ground-ice segregation and accompanying desiccation with the growth of ice lenses. Dense packing is attributed to the high stresses between the ice lenses.
