키케로와 헬레니즘철학: 『아카데미의 회의주의에 관하여』에 나타난 인식론을 중심으로

Abstract

헬레니즘 철학시대는 알렉산더 대왕이 죽은 기원전 323년부터 시작해서 기원전 100년경까지 계속되었다. 기원전 1세기경에 헬레니즘 철학이 쇠락했다는 것은 바로 이 시기에 로마제국의 시대에 들어서 부흥하게 될 플라톤주의(Platonism)와 아리스토텔레스주의(Aristotelianism)의 영향력이 커지기 시작했다는 것을 의미한다. 키케로는 기원전 106년에 태어나서 기원전 43년에 죽었으므로, 근 220여 년간에 발달되었던 헬레니즘철학을 조망할 수 있는 독특한 위치에 있었다. 그는 자신의 철학 작품들을 통하여 대부분의 자료가 망실되어 있는 헬레니즘철학의 내용을 충실하게 우리에게 전달해 주고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 자신이 속했던 회의주의적 신아카데미의 도그마에 연연하지 않고 헬레니즘시대의 대표적인 철학 학파인 아카데미학파, 소요학파 스토아학파, 에피쿠로스학파의 관점에 대해 자유롭게 의문을 제기했으며, 각 학파의 주장들을 하나씩 상호 비교했으며, 이성적으로 가장 일관되어 보이는 이론을 옹호했다. 키케로는 철학은 논리학-물리학-윤리학으로 구성된다는 헬레니즘철학체계를 수용하고 있으며, 항상 철학체계란 관점에서 헬레니즘철학을 이해하고 있다. 『아카데미의 회의주의에 관하여』는 철학체계의 출발점인 논리학 혹은 인식론을 다루는 대화편이다. 여기서 키케로는 지루한 논쟁에 휩싸였던 인식론의 위상을 찬성과 반대라는 양쪽의 측면에서의 대화를 통해 한 차원 높게 격상시키고 있으며, 지식이 윤리적 삶의 근원이라는 메시지를 강력하게 전달하고 있다. 우리는 이 대화편에 대한 이해 없이는 키케로의 철학체계에 들어설 수 없다.

The period of Hellenistic philosophy started from the death of King Alexander in 323 B.C. and ended in around 100 B.C., when the revival of Platonism and Aristotelianism began to arise. As Cicero was born in 106 B.C. and died in 42 B.C., he was able to overview all the developments of Hellenistic philosophy. His philosophical status was so peculiar that no other scholars could compete with him. His contributions to Hellenistic philosophy can be pointed out in two respects. First, he is a philosophical journalist who delivers the major contents of Hellenistic philosophy, about which other original sources are almost lost. Without Cicero's works, it is very difficult to reconstruct Hellenistic philosophy. And second, though he belongs to the Academic sceptics, he is not constrained by New Academy's dogmas: he dares to question all of philosophical claims by New Academy, Peripatetic, Stoics, Epicurean, and Old Academy and defends the most provable claims after comparing each philosophical school with another. Cicero accepts the tradition of Hellenistic philosophy that the philosophical system is composed of three areas of logic, physics, and ethics. Exploiting the philosophical system of logic-physics-ethics, he explains the essential aspects of the carious philosophical schools on the one hand, and he writes his own philosophical works. On the other hand on Academic Scepticism is the dialogue from which his philosophical system of logic-physics-ethics starts. In this dialogue, he attempts to uphold the status of epistemology and deliver the strong message that knowledge is the deepest source for living an ethical life. Without understanding this dialogue, we can never get into the Cicero's own philosophical system.
