조선시대 시민사회론의 재검토

Abstract

조선시대에 통상적인 의미의 민주주의가 존재하지 않았다는 것은 학계의 일치된 견해이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 조선시대 시민사회에 대한 일련의 논쟁이 존재해 왔다. 이는 역사학과 사회과학이 결합한 드문 사례 중의 하나로서 우리의 주목을 끈다. 그런데 민주주의가 부재했던 조선시대를 배경으로 시민사회를 논하는 것은 도대체 어떤 맥락에서 가능한 것인가? 그것은 어떤 쟁점을 잉태하고 있었고, 어떠한 발전 궤적을 거쳐 왔는가? 앞으로도 논쟁이 지속된다면 그 논쟁을 위해 규범적으로 바람직한 조건은 무엇인가? 이와 같은 질문을 염두에 두면서, 이 글은 조선시대 시민사회론을 둘러싼 논쟁을 비판적으로 재구성하고, 논쟁의 대안적 방향을 제시하고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구는 한국 현실을 이해하는 데 중요한 한 분야의 연구사를 정리하는 효과뿐 아니라, 서구에서 유래한 개념을 비서구권의 경험적 자료에 적용할 때 생길 수 있는 방법론적 문제에 대하여 일정한 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대한다.

The sustained debate in recent years concerning civil society in pre-modern Korea represents one of the best mediums through which we can discuss state-society relation of late Chôson Korea. This paper aims to critically reconstruct the trajectory of the debate and offer a new way to conceptualize the quasi civil society in late Chôson Korea. And then it explores the possibility that Neo-Confucianism may engender new forms of non-state governance, mechanisms of social control and moral regulation that were consonant with the goals of political elites but not directly subject to their authority. By examining the issue of civil society in late Chôson Korea, one may further articulate how one should theorize pre-modern political phenomena in social scientific terms. Thus, my specific objective is to outline new possibilities for combining historical scholarship and social scientific research. These new possibilities have implications for how we are to understand the political development in 19th and 20th century Korea.
