Abstract

The traditional understanding of Socrates depicts him as the one who exposed the assumptions and lack of knowledge hidden behind the deceptive language of Sophists. And it identifies the word rhetoric sometimes with sophistical rhetoric and sometimes with the external stylistic adornments of arguments. When we survey the history of political philosophy for a clear example of this traditional understanding, we find it in Nietzsche who bent all of his efforts toward overturning and overcoming the tradition. Nietzsche saw Socrates as the originator of the theoretical man, only to attack this type as arising out of and harboring resentment against life, whereas the tradition embraces this view of Socrates as a justification of itself. Nevertheless, both assume that Socrates was a theoretical man who rejected all forms of rhetoric and accepted a purely rational and theoretical dialectic as the proper language of philosophy. But it could be that both Nietzsche as well as the tradition he sought to overcome overlooked another important side of the story? Could it be that Socrates was the father of a very different kind of rhetoric, a rhetoric essentially different from both sophistical rhetoric and argumentative speech, a rhetoric that is the language of philosophy itself? Could it be that Socrates was himself not only a practitioner, but the originator of true rhetoric?
