dc.description.abstract | This paper is designed to explore what goals university graduate education
particularly in law is supposed to achieve and how on the basis of life-long personal observations and experiences both as a graduate student and as a professor. How to differentiate graduate education either from undergraduate education or from professional education which is conducted usually at graduate level in a typical American universities is one of the key questions raised to answer here. The question becomes complicated in Korea by the facts that undergraduate education is not well differentiated from graduate education in its goals and approaches beyond its formal institutional differentiation: a beginning college student enters a particular department of university from which he graduates practically without a chance to change his major which he has to choose when he enters university; graduate students of a particular department are mostly those who were the undergraduates of the same department; professional subjects such as law, medicine, and business administration are those of undergraduate education; and so on. Proposals to reform undergraduate education toward a general education with graduate education professionalized and to reorganize professional subjects into those of graduate-level professional education have recently been hotly debated. Scholarly training is assumed here as one of the major goals which graduate education is designed to achieve.
