Abstract
This paper sheds light on the rise of the Chinese economy as one of the G-2 members in the 21st century, and further inspects the so called China Risk and Chinese Threat to Japan arguments in terms of economic perspective. First of all, it is confirmed that the Chinese economy may fall into the middle-income trap mainly due to their firms low-level technology, low fertility rates, population aging, and wage push. However, it is shown that Chinese threat to Japan in terms of economic perspective may not be as serious as it is expected. Recently, Chinese Threat to Japan has been realized in a series of diplomatic episodes such as Japanese governments suspension of ODA commitments to China, and Japan-China conflicts over natural resource development in East China Sea. Notwithstanding these diplomatic conflicts between Japan and China, there is no evidence that Chinese firms dominate Japanese domestic markets or the growing increase of Japanese firms FDI into China cause deindustrialization of Japan. These findings imply that the Japan-China economic relationship should be considered as mutually complementary, rather than incompatible.
