Abstract
A histopathologic reappraisal of lasiocarpine(pyrrolizidine
alkaloid)-induced megalocytosis of the
liver on rats was carried out. as an attempt to
compare with similar hepatic cell alterations encountered
frequently among Koreans and to clarify
its biological significance on those phenomena.
Megalocytosis. a characteristic hepatic cell unrest,
was found in groups of lasiocarpine and p-dimethylaminoazobenzene
administration. but much advanced
in animals treated with lasiocarpine and p-dimethylaminoazobenzene
together, being progressive and
constant with prolongation of experimental duration
and regenerative activity of underlying hepatic
tissue.
Megalocytosis produced in rats was cytologically and histoioglcally quite similar or nearly identical
to those seen in 27 cases of liver biopsy materials
with history of taking herb-medicine in 23 Koreans.

criteria to screen hepatotoxicity of herb medicine
in Korea.
