1930년대 후반 식민지 조선에 끼친 프랑스영화의 영향

Abstract

이 글은 1930년대 후반 식민지 조선에서 프랑스영화의 수용 양상을 검토하고 있다. 식민지 조선에서 외국영화의 수용이 근대문화 형성 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하였다는 사실은 주지의 사실이다. 최근 할리우드영화 중심의 수용 양상에 대한 제반 연구들은 이와 같은 문제의식에 기반을 둔 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 외국영화 관련 기존 연구에서 거의 다뤄지지 못한 프랑스영화를 그 논의 대상으로 하였다. 1930년대에 프랑스영화 중 일부 영화들은 대중적인 호응을 얻었으나 대체로 프랑스영화는 지식인들을 주요 관객으로 한 지식인 영화라는 성격이 강했다. 특히 이 중에서도 문인들은 근대 이후 문화예술에 대한 영감의 원천이었던 프랑스에서 생산된 영화들에도 깊은 관심을 표명하고 있었고 특정한 방식으로 이들에 영향을 받고 있었다. 본론에서는 프랑스영화가 수용되는 과정에 개입되는 조건을 검토하고, 실제로 당시에 어떤 프랑스영화들이 개봉되어 관객에게 제공되었는가를 당대의 문헌자료를 바탕으로 조사하였다. 또 이런 영화들이 관객들 특히 그중에서도 문인들에게 어떻게 받아들여지고 자신들의 창작활동에 연계되고 있는가를 살펴보았다. 논의에 참고할 수 있는 기초적인 자료가 상당히 부족하고, 기존 논의가 전무하다시피 한 상태이다. 이런 한계로 인해 이 글이 기초적인 자료 정리 이상의 정밀한 논의 구도를 제시하지 못한 것은 약점이다. 그러나 차후 관련 논의의 출발점이 될 수 있다는 점을 이 글의 의의로 삼고자 한다. This article investigates the influence of French film in Colonial Joseon in the late 1930s. It is well known that in Colonial Joseon, foreign movies played an important part in the formation of modern culture. Recent studies focusing on Hollywood films have been based on such thinking. However, previous articles on foreign films have not dealt with French films in depth. Some French films had a popular viewership in the 1930s but generally it was the highbrows that were the main consumers of French films. Among these consumers were many literary intellectuals who had a deep interest in movies that had been made in France, the country of culture and art. This influence was reflected in the works that they created. Firstly, in this article, I examine the factors that were involved in the adoption of French films in Korea. Then I investigate what French movies were actually offered to the audience, based on documentary data. Finally, I examine how literary intellectuals were influenced by these movies, and how those influences were associated with their creative activities. The basic data considered in this discussion are fairly insufficient, and previous studies on this topic are limited. Because of this, the current article was not able to go beyond basic data tabulation. However, it is hoped that this paper may act as a starting point for studies that may follow in the future.
