｢호외시대｣ 재론(再論) : <매일신보> 신문연재소설로서의 특성을 중심으로

Abstract

이 논문은 최서해가 남긴 유일한 장편소설인 ｢호외시대｣를 󰡔매일신보󰡕에 수록된 신문연재소설로서의 특성을 중심으로 살피는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 따라서 본 논문은 ｢호외시대｣의 문학사적 가치를 평가하려는 기존의 연구의 시각과는 달리, ｢호외시대｣ 창작의 배경이나 서사진행의 핵심 요소들을 󰡔매일신보󰡕의 미디어적 배치와 전략을 통해 살피고자 하였다는 특징을 지닌다. 1930년 2월 󰡔매일신보󰡕는 창간 25주년을 기념하여, 사장 이하 편집진을 교체하고 대대적인 지면 개편을 실시하였다. 당시 󰡔중외일보󰡕에 근무하던 최서해는 󰡔매일신보󰡕로 이동하여 학예면 운영을 담당하게 되었다. 4면에서 8면으로 지면을 확대한 󰡔매일신보󰡕는 4면과 5면을 소년소녀란과 가정란으로 편성하고, 각각의 성격에 맞는 소설 연재를 시작하였다. 5면 가정란에 연재된 최서해의 ｢호외시대｣는 주로 한 글에 익숙한 여성 중심의 일반 대중독자를 위한 소설이었다. 󰡔매일신보󰡕의 학예면 분화 전략에 따라 연재된 ｢호외시대｣는 1930년대 신문연재소설의 특성을 구체적으로 파악할 수 있는 사례가 된다. ｢호외시대｣는 식민지 검열을 일정 부분 의식하면서도 나름의 대응 전략을 실현코자 했으며, 대중 독자와의 소통을 다양한 방법을 통해 고민한 작품이었다. 또한 독자의 흥미를 이끌어내기 위한 다양한 서사 장치와 서술 기법을 활용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결국 본 연구는 총독부 기관지 󰡔매일신보󰡕 또는 신문연재소설에 대한 부정적 인식을 재고하고, ｢호외시대｣가 지닌 신문연재소설로서의 특성을 더욱 구체적으로 파악하고자 하였다. 이러한 시도가 ｢호외시대｣에 대한 편향된 문학사적 시선을 바로잡고, 더 나아가 근대 시기 신문연재소설이 지닌 독특한 자질을 이해하기 위한 또 하나의 방편이 되길 기대해 본다. The purpose of this paper is to examine Ho-oe Sidae, the only full-length novel written by Seohae Choe, with focus on its characteristics as a serial novel of the newspaper Maeil Sinbo. Thus, this paper is characteristic in that it tries to take a look at the background of the creation of Ho-oe Sidae and the core elements of its narrative unfolding in terms of the media arrangement and strategies of Maeil Sinbo. As such, it is different from existing studies that have evaluated its value in terms of literary history. Ho-oe Sidae, published as a serial novel owing to the newspapers strategy of the independent characterization of the art and science page, is taken as a case that allows us to specifically clarify the characteristics of newspaper serial novels in the 1930s. Though he was aware of censorship, Choe tried to carry out his own counter-strategy in terms of the work, and reflected on communication with popular readers in various ways through the work. We can also observe that various narrative devices and descriptive techniques were used to attract readers interest. Above all, this study is an attempt to reconsider the negative recognition of the bulletin for the Japanese Government-General of Korea, Maeil Sinbo or of newspaper serial novels, and more specifically clarify the characteristics of Ho-oe Sidae as a newspaper serial novel.
