Nature of Youth Smartphone Addiction in Korea

Abstract

This study investigated the differences between smartphone users with high and low addiction tendencies among Korean college students. The analytical results revealed that more females were among the respondents with high addiction tendency. Highly addicted smartphone users have a greater level of motivation for chatting, caring for others, and accessibility to others than the low addictive users. The preference of smartphone activities, such as voice calls, social network sites(SNSs), and chatting, is shown among addicted smartphone users. In addition, those who showed higher level of addiction perceived smartphones more positively for bonding and bridging social relationships than those who have lower addictive tendency. As for the psychological traits, the respondents with high addiction tendency have higher shyness, loneliness and depression scores, and a lower self‐esteem score.

본 연구는 한국 대학생 스마트폰 이용자를 중독정도에 따라 구분하고, 중독성향 이 높은 집단과 낮은 집단의 성별, 스마트폰 이용 동기, 스마트폰 이용행태, 성격 요인, 사회적 관계 유지를 위한 스마트폰 이용의 유용성에 대한 인식의 차이를 조사하였다. 분석 결과, 여성이 남성보다 스마트폰 중독 성향이 높았으며, 이용 동기에 있어서 중독 성향이 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 채팅, 타인에 대한 보살핌, 타인에 대한 접근성이 더 높았다. 스마트폰 이용행태에서는 중독 성향이 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 전화, SNS 이용, 채팅에서 더 높은 선호도를 나타냈다. 성격요인에서는 중독 성향이 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 내향성(shyness)과 외로움은 높았으나, 자존감(self-esteem)은 더 낮았다. 마지막으로 중독 성향이 높은 집단이 낮은 집단보다 결속적, 교량적 사회관계 유지에 있어 스마트폰 이용의 유용성에 대한 인식이 높은 것으로 나타났다.
