내셔널리즘과 '전통의 발명' : 전통의 발명 담론을 둘러싼 인류학의 논쟁과 민속학에서의 포크로리즘 논의를 중심으로

Abstract

내셔널리즘과 전통의 연관성은 주로 국가만들기 과정에서 전통이 어떻게 이데올로기적 실천 속에 위치하고 있는지를 중심으로 논의되어 왔다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 논의들 속에서 전통의 발명 담론은 내셔널리즘에 대한 비판적 이해를 확장하는 데 기여해 왔을 뿐 아니라, 현대 사회 속에서 전통으로 호명되는 현상들에 대한 사회․문화적 의미에 대한 연구를 진전시키는데 중요한 토대가 되었다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 실제로, 과거와 현재 사이에서 상호작용 되는 전통의 역동적인 실천은 역사학과 사회학, 인류학과 민속학 등에서 의미있는 키워드로 선택되었던 주제이기도 하다. 특히, 전통을 발명되어진 혹은 만들어진 것으로 설명하는 논의들은 전통의 개념과 정의 그리고 그것의 특성이 무엇인지부터 시작하여, 어떠한 과정을 통해 어떻게 실천되었는지와 그러한 실천들이 함의하는 의미들이 무엇인가에 이르기까지 많은 질문들을 제기해왔다.

The debates of invention of tradition' in anthropology and folkloristics have been discussed centered on keywords such as nationalism, cultural identity and folklorism. Anthropology is also in the crisis of representation' and it developed the discourse as an inter- pretation of the identity. Additionally, it confirmed that anthropology has the inseparable relationship with the cultural politics in the process of the debate. At the same time, folklorists raised the politics of folkloristics on the basic interpretation of tradition redefined by anthropologists. In the process of dicussion, the folklorism has been embraced and interacted with the discourse of invention of tradition' since 1990's. The discourse of the invention of tradition' also provided the theoretical basis to reconsider the nationalism in Korea. It contributed to the spread of the study how we can interprete the policies of authoritative regimes in 1960-1970's. Just as in the West, however, its discursive authority' also appeared in Korea. Now, we have to lay down the position as the dominant discourse and reconsider the new roles and definitions in global environments.
