요시나가 후미의 <오오쿠>(大奥) : 역사적 상상력과 여성만화의 가능성

Abstract

이 논문은 요시나가 후미의 「오오쿠」를 1) 여성적 관점에서 역사 다시 읽기, 2) 젠더의 재구성을 통한 유희화, 3) 소녀만화와 BL만화의 경계넘기라는 세 가지 측면에서 분석한다. 우선 「오오쿠」는 요시야 노부코의 소설 『도쿠가와의 부인들』의 영향을 받아 도쿠가와 막부시대를 살아간 다양한 여성 쇼군과 주위의 남자들을 묘사하여 사회구조에 내재한 억압에 대해 문제를 제기하고 여성이 주체가 되는 남성과의 유대를 그려내고 있다. 둘째, 여성 장군 시대의 개막과 종언에 이르는 과정을 묘사함으로써 사회적으로 구성되는 성차로서 젠더가 변화하고 재구성되는 과정을 그려내고 있다. 이는 일본의 소녀만화가 탐구해 온 양성구유의 여성 주인공, 나아가 동질성이 강조되는 남성 간의 호모섹슈얼한 관계를 통해 차이로서의 젠더를 유희화하는 데 성공한 BL만화의 전통에 힘입은 바 크다. 셋째, 요시나가는 같은 뿌리를 지녔음에도 보이지 않는 벽으로 분리되어 있는 소녀만화, BL만화, 동인지문화를 가로질러 활동하고 있으며 「오오쿠」는 그녀의 이러한 경계 넘기가 가장 효과적으로 드러난 작품이라 평할 수 있다. 결론적으로 요시나가의 「오오쿠」는 대중장르로서 일본의 여성만화가 도달한 가장 급진적인 여성의식을 가장 대중적인 형태로 전달하는 데 성공한 작품으로 학문으로는 불가능한, 일반 여성의 젠더 의식을 고취하는 성과를 거두었다고 평가할 수 있다. In this article, I analyze Yoshinaga Fumis Ooku— the Inner Chambers through three aspects- 1) rereading Japanese History through womens perspective, 2) making gender as entertainment through its reconstruction, and 3) border-crossing of shojo manga and Boys Love manga. First, heavily influenced by Yoshiya Nobukos novel Th e Ladies of the Tokugawa Shoguns, Ooku describes a variety of female shoguns and their man, in order to problematize the oppressive social structure and depict the relationship between women and men, initiated by women. Second, the description of the whole process of female shoguns advent and demise enables Yoshinaga to elucidate the change and reconstruction of gender as a social construction. This is based on the traditions of Japanese shojo manga that has explored androgynous heroines, as well as that of BL manga that have succeeded in depicting male homosexuality through which they explored gender as difference. Third, Yoshinagas trajectory shows us that she has crossed various borders of shojo manga, BL manga, and dojinshi culture, and Ooku is one of the most powerful examples of her bordercrossings. In conclusion, Ooku should be highly evaluated in that Yoshinaga succeeds in inspiring Japanese peoples sense of gender through her manga, which is firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese womens manga, without losing the meaning of Ooku as popular entertainment.
