역사에 기록되지 않은 자의 낭만적 형상화 : 박화성의 「백화」론

Abstract

이 글은 1930년대 신문연재 역사소설로서 그다지 주목받지 못했던 박화성의 「백화」를 살펴보고자 했다. 작가는 작품의 의도를 세상의 흑막을 밝히기 위함이라고 명시한 바 있다. 이러한 취지는 계급성이 전면에 드러난 기존의 단편들에서도 누차 언급된 것이다. 작가는 이에 더하여 「백화」에서 비현실적일 만큼 권선징악의 법칙이 철저히 이뤄지는 낭만적인 세계를 구축하고 있다. 이는 정인섭이 말한 바, 센티멘털한 계급성으로 시적인 계급성이라 말할 수 있다. 이를 위해 작품은 복수 모티프를 반복적으로 활용하고 있다. 이는 작품의 주제인 의를 구현해 내는 방법으로, 시가 또한 독특한 작품 형식으로서 동원되고 있다. 부연하자면 「백화」는 복수와 의의 노래와 은의에 대한 보은 관계로 구성되어 있다. 이러한 구성의 목적은 충의와 은의 그리고 대의로 구성된 의의 세계를 재현해 내는 데 있다. 작품에서 이는 「침부사」를 통해 압축적으로 드러난다. 이 주제곡은 충의를 담지하고 있으며, 왕생과 백화를 연결하는 중요한 실마리로 쓰이고 있다. 걸객과 기생으로 전락했던 이들은 이 노래를 통해 예술가로 거듭나며, 본래의 고결한 심지를 잃지 않고 의를 섬기는 참 인간으로 재탄생한다. 작가는 이들 이외에, 주변 인물들의 이야기를 적지 않게 상술하고 있다. 그들은 마치 주인공들의 분신과 같이 사고하고 행동한다. 이것은 의의 확산을 말하며, 의의 세계의 성립가능성을 보여준다. 다시 말해 작가는 작품의 제목에서와 같이 실존인물보다 허구적인 인물에, 중심인물 못지않게 주변 인물들에게 상당한 비중을 할애하고 있다. 이들은 모두 역사에 기록되지 않은 자들이다. 이로써 작가는 역사의 유랑민들을 작품 전면에 호출해 낸다. 시대적인 비운으로 거대한 역사 속에 사라져버린 인물들의 행방을 추적하면서, 작가는 그와 함께 사라져버린 전통적인 가치인 의를 현재의 산물로 소환해 내는데 성공하고 있다.

Park Hwaseongs novel Baekhwa, which was serialized in the newspaper Donga Ilbo, is generally not regarded as a representative historical novel of the Japanese Colonial Period. As such, a study on the newspaper series text of Baekhwa has not been carried out even though it is complete in form. Therefore, the current paper aims to deal with the material of the series itself. The focus of this paper is the representation of the sentimental class nature in Baekhwa. First of all, Park made an ideal world in order to realize revenge against the evildoer(勸善懲惡). Secondly, each characters emotional thinking was expressed by poetry and music(詩歌). Loyalty was implied by poetry and music, which operated to connect Wangsaeng and Baekhwa as important clues. They were reborn as the artist by poetry and music without losing their original nobility, and reborn as true human beings. Finally, the characters were linked by a debt of gratitude(恩義) to one another. They swore brotherhood and married each other in the name of comrades(志氣相合). Moral justice(義), in particular, is this novels main theme and is connected with the plot of the revenge. Although this series is a historical novel, it focused on fictional characters rather than actual characters. They are unrecorded characters, such as the Subaltern. Park succeeded in delivering, through them, the message that the realization of justice makes the world better.
