조선후기 세계 지리지에 대한 시론적 고찰

Abstract

조선후기 세계지리 저술의 선구적 저작은 이수광의 지봉유설에서 볼 수 있다. 이수광은 중국 使行의 경험과 서구식 세계지도의 열람 등을 통해 기존의 중국 문헌에서 볼 수 없던 다양한 이역의 국가들을 기술했다. 18세기에 접어들어 세계지리의 저술들이 다양하게 나타난다. 위백규의 환영지에는 원형의 천하도에 수록된 나라들과 알레니(Aleni)의 직방외기에 수록된 異域의 지명, 서구식 세계지도에서 볼 수 있는 나라들에 대한 기술이 수록되어 있다. 18세기 후반에 저술된 서명응의 ｢緯史｣는 독특한 체제를 지닌 세계 지리지로 세계지역 구획의 방법은 세계 지리학사에서도 그 유래를 찾아보기 힘든 것으로 평가된다. 동양의 전통적인 방식과 서양의 자연과학 지식을 결합하여 독창적인 세계지리의 저술을 완성한 것이다. 19세기에 접어들어 세계지리의 저술이 더욱 성숙해져 갔다. 최한기는 지구전요에서 그의 氣學을 바탕으로 항목을 재구성한 세계지리지를 기술하였다. 19세기 말 오횡묵은 여재촬요에서 최신의 자료를 활용하여 세계지리지를 작성하였다. 이러한 저술은 당시 급변하는 국제정세를 인식하고 대처하고자 하는 실용적 목적에서 비롯되었다. 미국인 선교사 헐버트가 편찬한 사민필지는 기초적인 지리지식은 물론 세계 여러 나라에 대한 이해를 돕는 데 큰 영향을 끼쳤으며, 한글로 쓰여서 학생뿐만 아니라 일반 대중에게도 널리 읽혀졌다.

The pioneering writings of world geographies in late Joseon can be peeked through Jibong Yuseol 芝峯類說 A Discussion of Geography and Astrologyby Lee Su-Gwang. Lee Su-Gwang described various distant countries that were not found in existing Chinese literatures by visiting China and reading western world maps. From the beginning of the 18th century, the writings of world geography appear diversely. Hwanyoungji 寰瀛誌 by Wui Baek-Gyu includes descriptions of countries listed in Cheonhado, the names of foreign areas listed in Zhi fāng wai ji 職方外紀 a work by Aleni, and countries that were found only in the western world atlas. ｢Wuisa 緯史｣ that Seo Myeong-Eung wrote in the late 18th century, a world geography book with unique layout, is evaluated as unprecedented even in the world history of geography study on its method of classifying world geography. This book covers world geography in unique perspective by integrating the traditional method of the East and the nature science knowledge of the West. In the 19th century, writings of world geography grew further mature.
