영조대 성균관 유생의 정치활동 규제와 士氣의 저하

Abstract

탕평을 표방한 영조는 붕당간의 대립을 타파하고 왕권을 정점으로 한 관료국가체제를 회복하고자 하였다. 이에 짝하여 성균관에서는 강학활동을 늘려 성균관의 교육 기능을 강화하는 한편 유생들의 당색을 띤 정치 활동은 제한하고자 하였다. 영조의 의지는 정치 활동을 중심으로 독자적인 활동 영역을 확보해 온 성균관 유생들의 입장과는 배치되는 것이었다. 따라서 국왕과 성균관 유생들, 그 조력자인 朝官 사이에는 갈등과 긴장이 형성되었다. 이 글에서는 성균관 유생들의 정치적 역할과 위상 문제를 중심으로 영조대 성균관 유생의 정치활동에 대한 규제와 그 귀결에 대해 살펴보았다.

King Yeongjo, who promoted the policy of Tangpyeong, intended to get rid of the conflicts and clashes between Bungdang parties, and tried to restore an official governing system with the leadership of the king at the center. So he increased the time of lectures in order to reinforce the educational functions of the Seonggyun-gwan university. And he also prohibited the students from engaging in political activities. Contrary to his plans, the students had been trying to secure spaces of their own through political actions. Tension between the king, the Seonggyun-gwan students and their supporters(the governmental officials) continued to rise. Examined in this article is the political role of the Seonggyun-gwan students, their status, the prohibition on their political activities, as well as the result.
