광복 이후 한국종교의 정체성

Abstract

종교(religion) 라는 말을 잘 아는 서양인들에게는 좀 이상하겠지만, [한국인들에게] 종교라는 단어는 아주 넓은 의미로 쓰이는데, 인간보다 높거나 (superhuman), 인간보다 낮거나(infrahuman) 또는 아주 더 넓게 보면, 인간 밖에 있는(extra-human) 어떤 현상까지를 붙들거나 또는 붙든다고 믿는 모든 관계(relation)를 포괄하는 것으로 여기는 게 좋다고 본다.... 모든 한국인의 심성(Korean mind)에는 하나의 뒤범벅인 전제(a jumble of the whole)가 있다. 즉, 논리적으로는 서로 논박도 하지만, 서로 다른 신행들(cults) 사이에 적대감은 없다. 그들은 여러 세기에 걸쳐 서로 친숙해져서 일종의 종교적 복합물(a sort of religious composite)을 형성하게 되었다. 그로부터 개개인들은 나머지를 전혀 무시하지 않고 자기가 가장 선호하는 성분들(ingredients)을 택하는 것이다. 어느 누구도 이 복합 종교(composite religion)의 어느 한 양상에만 집착할 필요는 없는 것이다.... 일반적으로 흔히 한국인은 사회 속에 있을 때는 유교도(Confucianist)이고, 철학적이 되면 불교도(Buddhist)이고, 곤경에 처했을 때는 정령숭배자(spirit-worshipper)가 된다고 말할 수 있다.

The identity of modern Korean Religion has been often said to be characterized by the multi-layered religious pluralism. This thesis, however, emphasizes the balanced competitive situation of the eastern religions and the western religions much more than that. Above all, the identity of the modern Korean Religion after 1945 is noted to be changed through the mega trends of the religious, the introduction of the Christianity and religious pluralism and various new religious and spiritual movements. As a result, such change of religious identity as it has been above mentioned is explained to be composed of the uniqueness of the balanced competitive situations and religious dynamics expanding to other social areas in the contemporary Korea.
