감정의 국제정치이론을 위한 시론 : 동아시아에 대한 적용 가능성의 탐색

Abstract

이 논문에서는 감정의 변수가 사회적 기능을 수행하는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 담당한다는 점을 부각시키고, 정체성을 수립하기 위한 매개체로서 공동의 역사와 기억을 만들어내는 요소라는 점을 강조한다. 감정은 트라우마를 통해 정체성의 위기가 초래될 경우 적극적인 집중화의 노력을 통해 정체성 회복과 재구성에 결정적인 기여를 한다. 이러한 특성들은 사회적 관계, 특히 국가와 민족 등 집단 사이의 관계를 이해하는 데 유용하게 적용될 수 있으며, 동아시아의 국제정치를 탐구하는 데 있어 적극적으로 원용될 필요가 있다는 것이 논문의 주장이다. 이를 위해 이 논문에서는 동아시아 국제정치이론이 왜 미흡한가에 대한 학계의 관심을 소개하고, 이것이 서구 중심의 메타서사 구조에서 벗어나기 위한 문제의식을 반영하고 있다는 점을 강조하면서 감정의 패러다임을 제시한다. 이를 바탕으로 감정의 개념과 그에 대한 철학적 논의, 이성과 감정의 관계에 대한 국제정치학 내의 논의를 정리하고, 감정 변수가 사회적 관계에서 작용하는 메커니즘, 그리고 집단정체성과 역사, 기억 사이에서 감정이 수행하는 역할에 초점을 맞춘다. 이러한 논의에 이어 동아시아에서 감정의 패러다임이 적극 도입되어야 하는 이론적 근거를 제시한다.

This paper discusses social roles of emotions by emphasizing its function of media in establishing identity by creating common histories and memories. Emotions contribute to the recovery and reconstruction of collective identities through active concentration whenever those identities are in crisis under trauma. These features of emotions may be applied to understanding the social relationship between groups such as states or nations. Also the paper argues for the paradigm of emotions in proposing a new approach of international relations of East Asia. The paper introduces, in this context, reflexive movements for indigenous theories in East Asia and existing discourses on the concepts and theoretical mechanisms of emotions both in philosophy and international relations. Detailed notions, based upon scientific findings and researches, on the reasonemotions nexus, social functions of emotions, collective identities, the relationship between history, memory, trauma and emotions are discussed. The paper, in conclusion, argues that the paradigm of emotions is a necessary element in developing international theories of East Asia.
