『코리올레이너스』(Coriolanus)에서 나타나는 로마 공화정 이상(Roman Republican Ideal)의 해부

Abstract

근대 초기 영국에서 고전적 인문주의(classical humanism)는 당대의 정치적 상황을 이해하고 개념화하는 문화언어의 창고로서 적지 않은 역할을 담당하였다. 이중 특히 공화주의(republicanism) 담론은 주목할 만한 것으로서 이것은 군주제 국가인 영국에서 덕이 높은 조언자들이 군주의 권력 남용을 견제하여 법의 테두리 내에서 힘을 행사할 수 있도록 개입하는 행위를 정당화해 줌과 동시에 국가 공동체의 이익을 개인의 사사로운 이익보다 우선순위에 놓는 시민적 덕목(civic virtue)의 배양을 도왔다(Peltonen 1-17; Skinner, Visions of Politics 1-38). 공민적 인문주의(civic humanism)라고도 불리는 이러한 사상적 흐름과 더불어, 후사가 없던 엘리자베스(Elizabeth)의 뒤를 이을 군주로서 스코틀랜드의 여왕 매리(Mary)와 그의 아들 제임스 6세(James VI)의 자질과 정통성이 의심받는 정치적 상황은 권력의 유지와 이양을 둘러싼 논쟁을 불러일으켰고 이러한 상황은 많은 이들이 선거에 의한 군주제 및 당시 이탈리아 도시 국가들이 채택했던 공화정에 관심을 기울이는 계기를 마련했다(Hadfield, Shakespeare and Republicanism 465). 공화주의의 이상 및 그에 대한 탐구는 정치와 역사를 직접적으로 다룬 글뿐만이 아니라 문학의 영역에서도 수시로 등장하였다(Hadfield, Shakespeare and Republicanism 13).

This paper explores how Shakespeares Coriolanus dramatizes the inherent contradictions of the Roman Republican ideal by portraying both the success and ultimate failure of its eponymous character. Virtus, originally meaning in Latin military prowess but also implying readiness to promote the common good, constitutes the core value of the republic. Its owner is requested to pursue public interest and acquires personal honor in return; when manifested properly, virtus may ensure the flourishing of the community as well as of the individual. Coriolanus, a distinguished Roman general who embodies the republican value, saves his country from the Volsces attack and is encouraged to run as a candidate for the consulship. Blind to Romes heterogeneous social strata, however, he stubbornly refuses to be acknowledged by the populace, believing there is no one but him who is truly Roman and represents Romanitas. His consequent banishment illustrates the malfunction of the virtus ideology since it fails to channel ones personal talent into furthering Romes public interest. Moreover, Coriolanus poses an even heavier threat against his native country after he allies himself with the Volsces.
