Abstract

토머스 하디(Thomas Hardy)의 『이름없는 주드』의 강렬한 여성 캐릭터인 수 브라이드헤드(Sue Bridehead)는 책 읽는 여성으로의 정체성이 가장 명확한 인물이자, 당대의 여성들이 겪었을 법한 거의 모든 문제를 껴안고 있는 인물이다. 보다 구체적으로 이 문제들은 결혼과 신체의 속박에 대한 거부, 상상 혹은 판타지의 실현과 관련된 불안, 결혼으로 비롯되는 출산의 위협, 맺어지기 어려운 (혹은 맺어져서는 안되는) 남성들과의 관계 등 이며, 당대의 다른 소설 속 여성인물들이 직면하고 있는 대표적인 문제거리로 수는 작품 전체에서 이러한 어려움을 온몸으로 겪어내고 맞서는 인물이다. 이 글은 수가 여성으로서 독립적인 자신의 정체성을 구축하고 실현해 가는 과정에서 그녀가 자신에게 주어진 근본적인 한계, 다시 말해 여성으로서의 섹슈얼리티에 수반되는 자연적, 사회적 제약들과 싸워나가는 노력을 살펴보며, 이러한 개인의 저항이 갖는 성취를 조명한다. 이 때 여기서 말하는 여성의 섹슈얼리티는, 여성의 몸을 가진 개인에게 시대와 환경이 부여하는 역할, 생각, 행동 방식에 대한 개인의 순응 혹은 타협을 요구한다는 점에서 문제적이다. 그녀는 자신을 둘러싼 작품 속의 인물들, 주드(Jude)와 필롯슨(Phillotson), 심지어 아라벨라(Arabella)와도 이 섹슈얼리티를 둘러싸고 끊임없는 갈등 혹은 대비를 보이지만 그녀 고유의 완전성, 즉 자신의 앎과 감정에 대한 자기 결정권 또는 주체성을 지키기 위해 주어진 환경에서 최선을 다한다.

Thomas Hardys Jude the Obscure presents an unforgettable heroine, Sue Bridehead, who is faced with all the limitations that her contemporary women might have had. These restraints, such as marriage and liability of childbirth, are problematic in that they require her to be obedient to the roles and expectations which society imposes on women. In line with this, some scholars for some time read her character as conventional for her outright rejection of sex or psychologically unstable for her fitful changes towards other characters. However, this paper refutes those analyses and argues that Sue fiercely defies these obstacles no matter how oppressive they are; by her relentless resistance, she comes through as an impressively courageous individual in spite of her tragic defeat in the end. And the means of accomplishing her selffulfillment as an independent being are her own studies, and this aspiration is what makes her continue to engage in a series of relationship with different male characters in the novel.
