식탁에서 평화까지 : 식맹(食盲)을 넘어 식안(食眼)을 열다

Abstract

먹는 행위와 먹히는 음식이 생명의 기본 원리를 구성한다. 이 글에서는 음식이 어디서 어떻게 오는지, 음식이 식탁 위에 오르기까지의 과정 및 먹는 행위의 의미에 대해 자연철학적 차원에서 반성적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 음식의 지구화 과정에 담긴 정치적이고 경제적인 의미를 염두에 두고서, 거대 자본이 지배하면서 농업과 먹거리가 이윤 창출을 위한 수단이 되어버린 현실을 비판적으로 성찰하고자 한다. 이러한 현실은 음식의 생산과정과 의미를 외면한 채 공장식 음식을 소비하는 데 머무는 식맹(食盲)의 결과이니, 음식의 자연적 원리와 사회적 의미에 대한 눈뜸, 즉 식안(食眼)으로 극복해야 한다는 제언을 담고자 한다. 음식의 원리를 외면하거나 망각하고서는 진정한 평화를 이룰 수 없다는 사실과 먹는 행위에 담긴 생명 법칙의 실천이 있어야 종교도 종교가 된다는 사실을 우회적이고 함축적으로 담아보도록 하겠다.

The act of eating and the food being eaten constitute the basic principle of life. This paper will reflectively discuss where food comes from, the processes that food must undergo before it can be served, and finally what it means to eat at the dimension of natural philosophy. This paper considers the political and economic meanings of food to critically examine how huge capital has globally dominated the food industry, and how food has become used as a means of profitability. People have a tendency, called as food-blindness, to ignore the processes of food production and in doing so, the true meaning of eating. Instead, they buy and consume food mechanically. Therefore, this paper suggests people glow their ability to see the natural and societal values of food, called as food-sight. This paper also asserts true peace is unattainable if the principle of food is ignored or forgotten, and the act of eating must be followed by the practice of living for religious purposes.
