디즈니랜드와 헤테로토피아 - <다니엘서>, <마법의 왕국>, <공개화형>

Abstract

본 논문에서는 헤테로토피아 개념을 염두에 두고 세 문학작품이 디즈니랜드의 속성을 제시하는 방식을 살펴본다. 디즈니랜드를 중심 주제로 다루거나 디즈니랜드의 특성을 작품의 주제와 밀접하게 관련된 배경으로 삼는 진지한 문학작품은 많지 않다. E. L. 닥터로(E. L. Doctorow)의 다니엘서(The Book of Daniel)와 스탠리 엘킨(Stanley Elkin)의 마법의 왕국(The Magic Kingdom), 그리고 로버트 쿠버(Robert Coover)의 공개화형(The Public Burning)은 비판적인, 풍자적인 시각으로 디즈니랜드의 중요한 속성을 이해하고 깊이 느낄 수 있도록 도와준다. 이 작품들이 모두 공간적 선회 경향에 큰 영향을 끼친 푸코의 헤테로토피아 개념이 널리 알려지기 전에 출간된 작품이라는 점을 고려하면 작가들이 헤테로토피아에 관한 푸코의 글을 접했으리라고 짐작하기 어렵다. 그럼에도 불구하고 푸코의 개념을 염두에 두고 이 작품들을 읽으면 헤테로토피아로서의 디즈니랜드의 속성과 상징성, 그리고 미국적 삶의 방식과 그것들 간의 관련성이 부각된다.

This study examines Disneyland around Michel Foucaults concept of heterotopia in the context of the American way of life. It particularly analyzes three novels in which Disneyland is backgrounded, foregrounded or intertextualized to highlight the themes of each work: E.L. Doctorows The Book of Daniel, Stanley Elkins The Magic Kingdom, and Robert Coovers The Public Burning. Since the idea of heterotopia has been used in a diversity of ways, this study takes it to mean a space that reflects society, but in a way which calls to mind idealized aspects of the culture. Each writer provides a vivid and powerful image of Disneyland: a space where history disappears, time stops, or the whole world is a kind of a circus show. The study suggests the need for contrasting, discordant, and different narratives about Disneys theme park to better understand it and its relationship with American culture in a complex fashion.
