조선 후기 래지덕(來知德) 역학(易學)의 수용과 비판

Abstract

본 논문은 래지덕 역학에 대한 조선 학자들의 수용과 비판 양상을 연구한 것이다. 조선의 역학사는 성리학의 역학사라 할 만큼 정이와 주희의 의리 역학이 중심이 되어왔고, <주역전의대전>이 <주역> 해석의 기본서로서 그 지위를 유지하였다. 하지만 이런 흐름 속에서도 괘효의 상(象)에 대한 탐구를 통해 <주역>의 괘효사를 해석하고자 하는 상수 역학에 대한 관심 또한 지속되었고, 이 과정에서 래지덕의 <주역집주>가 많은 주목을 받게 되었다. 조선의 학자들 중 일부는 래지덕의 역학을 긍정적으로 평가하여 그의 해석을 따르기도 하였고 나아가 착종설을 활용하여 <주역>에 관한 새로운 해석서를 남기기도 하였다. 하지만 대부분의 조선 학자들은 래지덕의 상수역학에 대하여 비판하였다. <주역> 해석에서 상을 무시하는 것도 문제지만 그렇다고 상에 대해 과도하게 집착하는 것 또한 바람직하지 않다는 것이 비판의 주된 이유였다. 이는 기본적으로 주희의 <주역> 해석 태도를 견지하는 것이다. 반면 정약용은 <주역> 해석이 반드시 상에 근거해야 한다는 래지덕의 입장을 긍정하면서도 착종설과 같은 래지덕의 역 해석 방법이 잘못임을 지적하였다. 대신 그는 역리사법(易理四法)이라는 해석 이론을 창안하여 <주역사전>이라는 새로운 역학 저술을 남겼다. 조선 학계에서 래지덕 역학은 결과적으로는 비판의 대상이 되었지만, 성리학의 권위를 넘어 새로운 <주역> 해석을 시도한 조선의 지식인에게 긍정적인 자극제 역할을 하였다.

This study examined the patterns of the Joseon scholars reception and criticism of Lai Zhi‐des study of changes during the Joseon Dynasty. The history of the study of changes in the Joseon Dynasty may be called the history of the Neo-Confucian study of changes. In this trend, however, the interest of the scholars continued to be in a symbol-number-based study of changes, which tried to interpret the words of Gua and Yao in The Book of Changes through exploring the symbols (象) of Gua and Yao, and in the course, Lai Zhi‐des Juyeokjipju drew peoples attention. Lai Zhi‐des study of changes became an object of criticism, but it played the role of a positive stimulation to Joseon intellects who tried to interpret The Book of Changes in a different way beyond the authority of Neo-Confucianism.
